Here are some of the Tips before travelling to Iceland.
Best Time to Travel
Iceland is a country with unpredictable weather conditions prevailing most of the time. Iceland is located at a high latitude, meaning there is no darkness from mid-April until mid-August. It is summer during this time and you will be able to visit most of the places without any hiccups. If you want to experience northern lights, then you have to visit between September and March. You should be aware that it will be winter during this time and weather cannot be trusted.
Arrival to Iceland
Once you arrive to Reykjavik after you clear the customs and collect your luggage, you can check with airport authorities about buses to travel to your hotel/airbnb from the airport. Not to mention that most of the bus drivers can speak English. There is an app called Strætó to Iceland’s city bus system and is one of the handiest tools for both permanent residents and visiting tourists. You can always download it and pay using the app.
Accommodation in Reykjavik
We had booked the accommodation through airbnb in Reykjavik. A small decent studio at 25 Hlíðargerði B, Reykjavík, Iceland 108, Iceland . It costed us around 280 USD for 4 days.
It is always advised to carry an international credit card before travelling to Iceland as it can be used everywhere. In Addition, you can exchange some at the airport as you might not get good rate. You can always exchange more in Reykjavik city if there is a need.
If you are sure of driving in spite of Icelandic harsh weather conditions, you can opt for rent a car when you land in Iceland. Otherwise, it is always advised to take a package tour since public transport is not available outside Reykjavik.
We had taken a group package tour from Iceland Horizon. If you can afford more, then you can opt for private tours. The cost of the package tours for us was around 530 USD for two people. you will have to book the tour first by providing confirmation over email and the payment will be done on the first day of the tour.
Iceland is an expensive country. If you are on a budget tour, then it is advised to carry food stuffs with you which can be readily made. If not, you can always buy food at supermarkets or have it at restaurants.
Iceland is a country with unpredictable weather conditions prevailing most of the time. It is always advised to carry extra thermals , Jackets and rain coats etc. to cater to the extreme weather.
