The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the Indian city of Agra. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan (reigned from 1628 to 1658), to house the tomb of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It also houses the tomb of Shah Jahan, the builder. The tomb is the centrepiece of a 17-hectare (42-acre) complex, which includes a mosque and a guest house, and is set in formal gardens bounded on three sides by a crenellated wall.

Since, Taj Mahal is in Agra which is in the Northern part of India, most people would prefer travelling to Agra from Delhi or Lucknow. There are many options to travel from Delhi or Lucknow to Agra.

Since, Agra is a famous tourist destination in India, you will have lot of options for accommodation. Try to look for accommodations which is very near to Taj Mahal so that It will not take much time from your hotel to visit the place. Since, the vehicles are not allowed near the gates , you can either walk or you can opt for cycle rickshaws to visit the gate. It will hardly cost you 50 INR.

Which Time to visit Taj Mahal

I would suggest to visit Taj Mahal very early in the morning by 6. Taj Mahal opening time. If you have plans of purchasing ticket on the same day , then plan to visit the ticket counter by 5.30 AM in the morning. If not, you can buy it on the previous day. Some people would prefer to visit before sunset. I am sure even this is a good option provided if there is less crowd.

Daytime: sunrise to sunset every day (06:00 am to 06:30 pm) except Friday. For both domestic and foreign tourists, no entry fee is charged for children below the age of 15. Ticket Outlets 
(Buying a Taj Mahal Ticket From Entry Gate Ticket Counter)
  • Taj Mahal Western Gate :- Tickets are available on Western Gate near Saheli Burj. (Timing-One Hour before Sunrise upto 45 Mintues before Sunset).

  • Taj Mahal Eastern Gate :- Tickets are available at Eastern Gate of Taj Mahal. (Timing-One Hour before Sunrise upto 45 Mintues before Sunset).

  • Taj Mahal Southern Gate :- No Entry from this gate at Present are not allowed from this gate only Exit is allowed.

Tickets may be purchased at all three Taj Mahal entry gates. There are separate queues for Foreign tourists and Domestic tourists and signs will direct you accordingly.

You can also buy the tickets from the Archaeological Survey of India office on Agra Mall Road between 10:00 am and 06:00 pm.

Things to carry before visiting

Well, If you want to have a peaceful time during security check for Taj Mahal, then i would suggest you to keep all your belongings at your htoel and carry only camera, phone , water bottle and some snacks to eat.

How much time to spend ?

Suppose if you reach early in the morning, you can spend around 2 to 3 hours visiting all the places like Jamia Masjid and main mausoleum of Tajmahal. You must know that it is one of the amazing places for photography lovers. you can take stunning pics with this wonder. Never lose this opportunity once you are there. I did not visit Taj Mahal during night. So, I will not be able to share the experiences.

Hire a Guide

Once you enter the main gate , you will notice lot of people who come to you asking if you need any guide. If you want to hire them , ask for their identification. Check with them if they are government approved. If you find that person is genuine, then you can do bargaining and hire him

Souvenirs to Buy

You will find many peddlers or hawkers offering a whole range of gifts to you as you step on to the streets. You need to stay away from them. Go to few shops near by and check with prices of the things you need to buy. In Addition, do not forget to purchase Agra Petha which is a translucent soft candy from Agra. Usually rectangular or cylindrical, it is made from the ash gourd vegetable. With growing demand and innovation, more varieties of the original preparation are available
